Expert's Pick
LYDA HILL
She spends summers in her beloved Colorado Springs and the rest of the year in Texas, and Hill, 71, the granddaughter of oil tycoon H.L. Hunt, has put her inheritance to work in both states. She’s now 35th on the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s list of the 50 most generous Americans, pledging $63.2 million to charities focused on science to solve social problems. Don’t be surprised if Hill isn’t content with being 35th, because this is a strong, competitive woman who, along with people like Bill and Melinda Gates, has signed the Giving Pledge to give away the majority of her wealth. Over five years she’s giving $50 million to the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Also, Hill donated the Garden of the Gods Visitor and Nature Center to a foundation to preserve and protect Garden of the Gods.
